ICA Films presents

GYPSY CARAVAN When the Road Bends…

A film by Jasmine Dellal

"It would be great if by experiencing the Romani people and their music, people can learn more about them and understand that - what you've believed about these people has been a lie your entire life."
Johnny Depp

“…give foot-stomping evidence of the diversity and connectedness of the vital Roma musical tradition.”
Time Out

“…Gypsy Caravan is as rich as the music it promotes. Fans of Buena Vista should definitely join the club.”

Gypsy Caravan: When the Road Bends… a vibrant and insightful documentary looking in to the largely unknown world of Romani music is out now to buy and rent on DVD courtesy of ICA Films. Part Rockumentary and Road movie the film follows five Romani bands on tour across America.

Shot by legendary cinematographer Albert Maysles and directed by Jasmine Dellal, this dynamic musical documentary sees five Gypsy bands from four countries unite for the Gypsy Caravan as they take their show around North America for a six-week tour, astounding every audience they meet. Their musical styles range from flamenco to brass band, Romanian violin to Indian folk. And with humour and soul in their voices, they celebrate the best in Gypsy culture and the diversity of the Romani people in an explosion of song and dance. As the film follows the amazing performances and behind-the-scenes action from the tour created by World Music Institute, we discover the real lives of these musicians. We visit Macedonia, Romania, India and Spain, meet their families and see what music brings to their lives. The tales of these characters are woven between their performances - allowing us to understand and celebrate Romani culture and the prejudice of their shared ancestry.

There she won a student Emmy for In His Own Image, a profile of a homeless photographer. She then went on to work with acclaimed filmmaker, Marlon Riggs, on the feature Black is…Black Ain’t.
