From Cornwall to Cumbria, Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities will be working in partnership with schools, councils and other public bodies to creatively challenge the many myths and stereotypes that blight Gypsy, Roma and Traveller lives.
Launched in June 2008, with political backing from the Department for Children Schools and Families (DCSF), Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History month was embraced by thousands of Gypsies and Travellers working alongside central government, local authorities, schools and heritage organisations to explore their own history and culture.
This June, its impact will be even bigger thanks to a doubled level of grant from the DCSF and more widespread grassroots support for the initiative. But it needs your involvement to make it even bigger. There are many ways in which you can take part.
- Participate and Organise – If you are from the Gypsy and Traveller, this month will be nothing without you. So go along to an event, or better still organise one yourself, there is some money available to help you do this. Community involvement is being coordinated by the Irish Travellers Movement in Britain who have produced this guide to organising local events - Getting Involved.
- Learn and Teach – Work in schools is being coordinated by Traveller Education Services around England. If you are a parent or a teacher wanting to get their school involved, contact your local Traveller Education Service through the National Association of Teachers of Travellers (www.natt.org.uk) or through their local Gypsy Roma and Traveller History Month organisers.
- Spread the word – Tell your story, list your event and advertise your support through the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month website and magazine out at the end of May 2009. For more information contact the Gypsy Media Company Ltd on 07966 786242 or email jake@grthm.co.uk
