GRTHM in Lambeth
In June 2009, Lambeth’s celebrations included dance, music and art workshops, author talk and story telling, film shows and photographic exhibitions.
In 2010, there will be an even wider and more varied range of events. All are welcome to the events they are throughout June including:
- an official history Month launch n Lambeth of 27 June at Brixton library
- half-term events with vibrant storyteller Tricia George
- Theatre and storytelling workshops for children 6 and upwards by "In Toto Theatre"
- Dance Workshops

- And a community fun day on 12 June at Streathma Vale Park

Be-Longing: Traveller Stories; Traveller Lives Exhibition
Traveller communities are the largest ethnic minority group in Europe with over 12 million people. For centuries they have suffered extreme levels of prejudice. It has been necessary for some to hide their identity to survive. Eva Sajovic’s exciting photographic exhibition Be-Longing shows the richness and diversity in the history and culture of these communities.

Moving Forward Together
‘Moving Forward together’ is a collection of photographs and children’s work celebrating Gypsy, Roma and Traveller culture and history in London. This exciting exhibition in City Hall is part of the third National celebration of GRTHM and has been put together by the London organization for Traveller Education Services Coordinators. The exhibition, which includes the Cloth of Gold project, highlights the existence of the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities living in London and the positive engagement made by these communities.
The organisers hope it will help visitors to develop an understanding and appreciation of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Communities, their rich history and culture and helps to dispel common myths and stereotypes about these communities.

“Jack and the Witches Bellows”
read by the Irish Traveller Cassie Marie McDonagh.
The story will be brought to life by amusing and vivid cartoons and you will get a chance to ask Cassie about Traveller life and culture based on her own life. The story time will be followed by the traditional Traveller craft of Flower Making.

Gypsy History Seminar
Persecution and Genocide: The triggers of Romani History?
Romani Studies Thomas Acton will be co-ordinating a History Seminar which will look at the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller experience of Holocaust, Genocide and persecution.
Presented by the Greenwich Traveller Education Service and the University of Greenwich.
It will be followed in the evening by the Private Viewing (with refreshments) of the exhibition of the work, depicting German Sinte before, during and after the Second World war, of the artist Otto Pankok in the Stephen Lawrence Gallery of the University.

Irish Traveller Women in London: A Celebration of History and Culture
London Irish Women’s Centre celebrates Gypsy, Roma & Traveller History Month June 2010 with an exciting new exhibition. The Exhibition features many pictures and artefacts illustrating the Irish Traveller’s way of life as well as a walk-through replica caravan.
Monday – Friday 10:00am - 4:00pm
Paper flower making workshops will take place on Wednesdays 9th/16th/23rd June from 11:00am -1:00pm and 2:00 - 4:00pm.
The Exhibition and workshops are enjoyable for all ages and are free of charge. School groups – please call to book in advance.

Pavee Widden
The Irish Ambassador, His Excellency Bobby McDonagh, will launch Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month 2010 in Southwark and a Southwark council-funded publication, Pavee Widden (Travellers Talking), in the council offices. This free event is open to the public but advance registration is essential.

Pavee Widden is a documentary photography project completed by the Slovenian photographer, Eva Sajovic, and produced by Southwark Travellers Action Group (STAG). It features portraits of members of Southwark's Gypsy Roma Traveller communities as well as interviews with those profiled, giving first hand insights into the realities of their lives.

When a gigantic white stallion appears mysteriously to a Traveller grandfather and his two grandsons in a Dublin slum the boys smuggle him into their flat! Knowing the police will soon be after the horse, the boys and the stallion set off on an epic adventure. The movie explores childhood, as well as the prejudices and challenges faced by modern day Traveller communities.
